以避免一場曠日持久的衝突，

新加坡外長維文在華盛頓發表講話時表示，

把中國視為必須加以遏制的對手是行不通的，

兩個大國之間應進行「建設性競爭」。

他指出，美國主導的世界秩序在過去70年里取得了成果，

如果世界分裂成一個個敵對的集團，將危及這些成果。

他還說：「新加坡既希望看到美國的持續性存在，

我們認為這是積極的，

也希望中國能夠在其發展並成為超級大國的過程中，獲得應有的地位。」

他還說，如果中美沒能達成貿易協議，

將極大地影響新加坡這樣依賴貿易的國家，

長時間的談判已經給市場帶來巨大的不確定性和波動。

「對於我們這些夾在中間的國家，特別是小國，

我們不希望被迫做出招人恨的選擇。

因此，我們希望，中美雙方能夠制定戰略性的方案，

考慮中國在國際舞台上日益增加的影響力和分量，

希望雙方設法照顧到彼此的合理利益。」
