李茂林,即李養心。明代嘉靖、萬曆間宜興制壺高手。號茂林。江蘇宜興人,一說江西婺源人。生卒不詳。「四名家」(董翰、趙梁、袁錫、時朋)後制壺名工,擅作小圓式壺,世稱「名玩」,樸實中具妍麗之態。排行第四,故又以「小圓壺李四老官」得名。制壺不加署款,僅朱書號記而已。原先壺坯,都附入缸窯燒造,不用匣缽封閉,沾有缸壇釉淚。自養心始,壺另作瓦囊,閉入陶穴,防止砂壺沾染釉淚,砂壺燒造質量大為提高。子李仲芳,亦是當時制壺名手。明代周高起《陽羨茗壺系·正始》:「李茂林,行四,名養心。制小圓式,研在朴致中,允屬名玩。自此以往,壺乃另作瓦囊,閉入陶穴,故前此名壺,不免沾缸壇油淚。」明代陳貞慧《秋園雜佩》稱:養心之壺藝在時大彬之上,為供春勁敵。傳世作品極少。民國李景康、張虹《陽羨砂壺圖考.創始》:「自正德以遞萬曆,所制多大壺,李茂林始制小圓式,實為陽羨小壺之鼻祖。」顧景舟主編《宜興紫砂珍賞》,著錄有李養心「菊花八瓣壺」一具,底刻款「李茂林造」四字楷書款。

此壺用料為已經絕跡的鱔魚黃,工藝十分精細,蓋與壺嚴絲合縫且平整。兩側有「福祿壽喜」「長樂」等圖文。外側壺底滿刻印文,壺底內側刻「李茂林造」印,壺蓋內側分別刻「李」和「林造」印,壺蓋內側分別刻「李」和「茂林」兩個小印。
