You’ll probably notice that most answers emphasize that Singaporean Chinese are Singaporean, not Chinese (by nationality). I’m going to offer another perspective. I’m going to say there are good reasons why Singaporean Chinese should feel “happy” whenever China does well as a nation.
As for “proud”, I think it’s a bit too personal of a sentiment to be having in relation to a large group of people who vaguely look like you in a racial sense. You can be proud of your children doing well, or proud of your achievements.

Racism against people of Chinese appearance
As a Singaporean Chinese living overseas, I have experienced prejudices and hasty judgements based largely on people’s perceptions of the average ethnic Chinese person, i.e. mainlander (since 1.3 billion Chinese reside there, and more than 1 billion will look ethnically similar to you). If China does very well as a nation, this perception will automatically change to benefit you. You would then be happy to have a Chinese appearance, because of the benefits that it brings you.

Basically, other people’s prejudices will leave you no choice but to wish that other people who look similar to you start doing better for themselves.

Cultural similarity
Having lived overseas and socialized pretty extensively with people of different nations, I can safely tell you that all East Asians have a pretty fucking similar culture, and are actually very different from other cultures.

The Singaporean Chinese who most strongly protest that they’re not at all Chinese ironically often are the most Chinese of them all.

Chinese are humans
so why not be happy if they do well?
One of the greatest humanitarian miracles of the world has happened in the past few decades, and it is the lifting of vast numbers out of abject poverty. China doing well means 1.3 billion living, breathing human beings doing well (on average). I guess it’s not feeling “proud” per se, but definitely I’d feel happy if they did well.

I would think it is human nature to have a mixture of pride, happiness and affinity for human progress Or technological advances, regardless of race, nationality or religion.
